April 2018 Advocacy Alert

Did you know that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month? Every year, Child Abuse Prevention Month brings to light the fact that many do not realize the  peril our children can experience and have to deal with right here in Northwest Florida. There are approximately 1,100 cases of child sexual and physical abuse reported annually in Okaloosa and Walton  Counties, an average of three a day. Despite those big numbers, nearly 2/3 of the actual needs to help child  victims go unmet due to lack of reporting to authorities.  Enter the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center. They provide services for young child abuse  victims and their families in a child-friendly environment.  There are two centers, one in Niceville in Okaloosa County, and the Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center in  DeFuniak Springs in Walton County. It is estimated that for every  one child ECCAC helps, there are two children out there who are not helped.

February 2018 Advocacy Alert

It was with much sadness that we had to say goodbye to our fearless COO,  Pat Franklin, at the end of 2017.  Pat touched just about every aspect of the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center. From making sure victims received the care they deserved, to managing repairs in both Centers (she is now an AC technician ), and making sure our staff was cared for, she  did it all with a smile, and a very calming presence. We will miss her tremendously and wish her luck as she continues her career in Tallahassee with DCF.

November 2017 Advocacy Alert

November Advocacy Alert
Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center November Newsletter
Pierce Family /   Donate  /   Events  /   Services
Meet Tom Cooper, the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center!

Tom was officially introduced to the ECCAC in 2007 when he toured the facility and met Mark Lunsford, the father of 2005 child murder victim Jessica Lunsford. At the time, Tom was running for Walton County Sheriff. Although Tom lost the race to current Sheriff Mike Adkinson, his path with the Center would cross again.

In 2013, Sheriff Adkinson brought Tom and Julie together again in an effort to bring a Center to Walton County, and the vision of what is now the Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center in DeFuniak Springs was born. Tom served as Chairman of the Committee to bring the Center to life.

Tom formally joined the ECCAC Board of Directors in 2013 and currently holds the seat of Vice President. He is a criminal justice graduate of Miami Dade College and the Southeast Florida Institute of Criminal Justice and previously enjoyed a successful career in law enforcement both full and part time with Walton and Marion County Sheriff's Department and Fort Walton Beach Police Department. He is currently the Executive Director of the homeowners association at Sandestin, a position that he has held for 18 years.

In his off time, Tom enjoys travel, scuba diving, and anything involving his family, particularly his grandkids Tynleigh and Kiptyn.

Thank you Tom for your selfless commitment to ECCAC!

The ECCAC would not be where we are today without the numerous volunteers that make so much happen. For the next several months, you will be introduced to the Board of Directors that volunteer their time to guide the organization. First off is our fearless Board President, Bill Fletcher, now in his second term as president. (Thanks Bill!)

Bill Fletcher was born in Kentucky and graduated from Stiver's High School in Dayton, Ohio as Class President. Bill was offered a chance to attend West Point on a scholarship, but had plans to become a doctor and had been accepted in Pre Med at the University of Dayton. Unfortunately, a serious work related injury sidelined him for a few years and he attended Business Administration classes at Wright State University, until Bill, his wife Mary and their two children moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he continued to take BA classes at Piedmont Community College. While in Charlotte, Bill was hired by a small company to promote coal combustion by-products (CCB's) to the ready mix concrete industry. He was promoted into a management position and transferred to Atlanta. While in Atlanta he joined, as Sales Manager, a small startup company that was in the same business. Eventually he became the President and CEO and grew the company into one of the largest in the United States handling marketing and disposal of CCB's for power plants throughout the country.

Bill left that business in 1998 and moved to Sandestin, Florida where he sold construction materials to the building industry. In 2003 Bill and Mary moved to Freeport, Florida where they currently live. Since 2009 he has been active in many areas including the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Station Destin, the Institute for Senior Professionals, the Kiwanis Club of Freeport-South Walton and the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce. Bill is also active in many community organizations and is presently the Walton County State Committeeman for the Republican Party.

Halloween Candy
Trick or treat, give us something good to eat! The ECCAC is currently accepting donations of individually wrapped candy in preparation for Halloween. In addition to passing out candy to all the little ghosts and goblins that come through the centers daily, we also need lots for the Halloween booth 'Around the Lake' in DeFuniak Springs and for BooLu Fest. Being able to give away candy at our booths encourages people to come by so we can share with them what we provide to our community.

IPOD
Do you have an IPOD you are no longer using? If so, please consider donating it to the Pierce Family Center so we can have music throughout the halls. Contact Chelsea at  chelsea@eccac.org if you can help.

Tervis
Save the planet, skip the plastic water bottles and get an ECCAC Tervis! Each custom Tervis is $20, please contact Kim at Kim@eccac.org to purchase yours!

Emerald Coast Impact 100
If you know someone affiliated with the Emerald Coast Impact 100 team, please share with them how much you support the ECCAC. ECCAC has applied to their organization for a grant to support the Child Safety Matters campaign. This is an educational tool that, if funded, ECCAC will take into the schools and educate children on various types of child abuse and what to do if they feel threatened. There are only three counties in the state of Florida that are not participating in this educational program, Okaloosa, Walton and Sarasota. If ECCAC is awarded this grant, it will allow our kids another tool to fight abuse.

We raced for a cause at Alys Beach's 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run, and we couldn't be more thankful that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the ECCAC!

We appreciate everyone who comes out to volunteer at the ECCAC, and we especially appreciate United Way for providing volunteers from our local community during their Day of Caring! A big thanks to ResortQuest & Electric Transformer for spending time at the Pierce Family Center!

What a yummy surprise! We'd like to t hank Jim & Tammy Pierce for sponsoring our staff lunches. Volunteer Dani Relyea, who hates to have her photo taken, made delicious chili for everyone last month at the Pierce Family Center!

Our Center has never looked prettier, thanks to Israel Williams of
Ziic Outdoors LLC. Israel and his staff have agreed to maintain the grounds at the Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center in DeFuniak Springs as their donation to our mission!

August Advocacy Alert
Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center August Newsletter
Pierce Family /   Donate  /   Events  /   Services
Each day is a day to celebrate at the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center. While what we do is not a cause for celebration, each day our staff, partner organizations and volunteers help children and families during a very traumatic time in their lives.

Thanks to the ECCAC team, during the month of July, seven cases were settled in court, with all but one of them being sexual in nature. Three were found guilty by a jury of their peers. Two of these are awaiting sentencing, while one already received life in prison. The other four pled guilty and were sentenced to a total of over eighty five years.

This is a testament to the brave children and the ECCAC team, as well as everyone that supports the ECCAC's mission. Without the staff, partners, volunteers and supporters, ECCAC would not have the resources or ability to help these children. So thank you for your continued support and give yourself a little pat on the back. Children in our community are a little bit safer, and those affected can now start to heal.

Recently one of our center's Mental Health Therapists passed along a story to our staff that really exemplifies why we do what we do, and just how much support from the community means to the ECCAC staff and our mission....

"I had a young man graduate today from therapy. His peer perpetrator will not be prosecuted, but this young man worked his treatment, learned how brave he really is, and was able to say, 'It was not my fault. I don't have to be embarrassed for something a *bad guy* did. It's his fault. I'm brave and I'm loved.'"

Our therapist also noted that the young man had amazing family who helped facilitate his speedy treatment.

It is stories like these that keep us fighting for our children. Without community support, moments like this would not be possible. So THANK YOU for you continued support and we look forward to meeting you at one of our next events.

Each month we use this section to educate everyone on the various parts of the Emerald Cost Children's Advocacy Center (ECCAC). So many organizations and people come together at ECCAC to make the process run smoothly and easier for those families going through a traumatic situation. This month we want to share with you a loss of one of our own.
Annabelle, and her handler Diane Berger, have been a Therapy Animal Volunteer Team at the ECCAC since the fall of 2015.  In April, Diane said had to say goodbye to Annabelle. She touched many lives during her time at ECCAC,  doing "meet and greets" in the lobby to help children and families feel more at ease during the rough storms of their lives, as well as being a therapy supporter with children during many trauma-focused treatment sessions. We are very blessed to have the time we did with Annabelle, and know she and Diane will forever be a part of the ECCAC team.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month, also known as Child Abuse Prevention Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child abuse. April has been designated Child Abuse Prevention Month in the United States since 1983.

There are approximately 1,100 cases of child sexual and physical abuse reported annually in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, an average of three a day. Despite those big numbers, nearly 2/3 of the actual needs to help child victims go unmet due to lack of reporting to authorities. It is estimated that for every one child ECCAC helps, there are two children out there who are not helped.

If you see something, call 1-800-96-ABUSE.

Volunteer Appreciation Kicks Off Monthly Tours
The week of April 24th is designated as Volunteer Appreciation Week and volunteers are a vital part of our organization. If you are a current volunteer or someone who has volunteered in the past, please stop by so we can thank you. If you are interested in learning more about our volunteer opportunities, stop by and we will happily give you a tour and all the info on how to be a part of our team. Volunteers are always needed to staff our front desk as well as assist with all events. In addition, we will kick off monthly tours of our centers. Starting in April, we will set aside one day each month at each center to provide tours and info for anyone that wants to stop by. No appointment necessary, just come by to see the center, ask questions, learn about volunteering or drop off a donation. Tours will take place from 10a.m. to 2p.m. the last Tuesday of every month in DeFuniak Springs and the last Thursday of every month in Niceville.
Volunteer Appreciation Day and tours will kick off April 25 in DeFuniak Springs and April 27 in Niceville. No need to R.s.vp. just stop in and allow us to show our appreciation.

Our DeFuniak Springs location is in need of volunteers to assist with our garden area. Volunteers are needed to to weed, trim and plant azaleas.

The ECCAC is now looking for donations of the following items...

Gas Cards: We are currently seeking donors to contribute $10 and $20 gas cards for our clients who cannot afford to come back and forth to therapy. We have services available to help kids and their families through this traumatic time, but sometimes they need a little support to get to us.
Annual Training Conference: This two day conference is coordinated by ECCAC and there are a few things needed to help make it a success. Pipe cleaners, 4 white coffee mugs, color pencils and 10 blue gift bags.

Special thanks to Jenn and Brent Auriemma for donating and installing a MUCH NEEDED new dishwasher at our Niceville center. Now dishes only need washed one time! Thanks Jen and Brent!

Thank you to Freeport Middle School AVID's for hosting Donuts for Donations on Friday, April 7.

Members of the International Wood Collectors Society donated toys and the Emerald Coast Woodturners helped assemble them and brought them to the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center at the end of last this month. Mr. Harry Wheeler was the member instrumental in putting this together. If you are interested in getting involved with this handy group, they  meet on the second Saturday in Freeport at the Community Center coming from 9am to 12pm.
