April 2018 Advocacy Alert

Did you know that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month? Every year, Child Abuse Prevention Month brings to light the fact that many do not realize the  peril our children can experience and have to deal with right here in Northwest Florida. There are approximately 1,100 cases of child sexual and physical abuse reported annually in Okaloosa and Walton  Counties, an average of three a day. Despite those big numbers, nearly 2/3 of the actual needs to help child  victims go unmet due to lack of reporting to authorities.  Enter the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center. They provide services for young child abuse  victims and their families in a child-friendly environment.  There are two centers, one in Niceville in Okaloosa County, and the Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center in  DeFuniak Springs in Walton County. It is estimated that for every  one child ECCAC helps, there are two children out there who are not helped.

February 2018 Advocacy Alert

It was with much sadness that we had to say goodbye to our fearless COO,  Pat Franklin, at the end of 2017.  Pat touched just about every aspect of the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center. From making sure victims received the care they deserved, to managing repairs in both Centers (she is now an AC technician ), and making sure our staff was cared for, she  did it all with a smile, and a very calming presence. We will miss her tremendously and wish her luck as she continues her career in Tallahassee with DCF.

November 2017 Advocacy Alert

November Advocacy Alert
Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center November Newsletter
Pierce Family /   Donate  /   Events  /   Services
Meet Tom Cooper, the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center!

Tom was officially introduced to the ECCAC in 2007 when he toured the facility and met Mark Lunsford, the father of 2005 child murder victim Jessica Lunsford. At the time, Tom was running for Walton County Sheriff. Although Tom lost the race to current Sheriff Mike Adkinson, his path with the Center would cross again.

In 2013, Sheriff Adkinson brought Tom and Julie together again in an effort to bring a Center to Walton County, and the vision of what is now the Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center in DeFuniak Springs was born. Tom served as Chairman of the Committee to bring the Center to life.

Tom formally joined the ECCAC Board of Directors in 2013 and currently holds the seat of Vice President. He is a criminal justice graduate of Miami Dade College and the Southeast Florida Institute of Criminal Justice and previously enjoyed a successful career in law enforcement both full and part time with Walton and Marion County Sheriff's Department and Fort Walton Beach Police Department. He is currently the Executive Director of the homeowners association at Sandestin, a position that he has held for 18 years.

In his off time, Tom enjoys travel, scuba diving, and anything involving his family, particularly his grandkids Tynleigh and Kiptyn.

Thank you Tom for your selfless commitment to ECCAC!

The ECCAC would not be where we are today without the numerous volunteers that make so much happen. For the next several months, you will be introduced to the Board of Directors that volunteer their time to guide the organization. First off is our fearless Board President, Bill Fletcher, now in his second term as president. (Thanks Bill!)

Bill Fletcher was born in Kentucky and graduated from Stiver's High School in Dayton, Ohio as Class President. Bill was offered a chance to attend West Point on a scholarship, but had plans to become a doctor and had been accepted in Pre Med at the University of Dayton. Unfortunately, a serious work related injury sidelined him for a few years and he attended Business Administration classes at Wright State University, until Bill, his wife Mary and their two children moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he continued to take BA classes at Piedmont Community College. While in Charlotte, Bill was hired by a small company to promote coal combustion by-products (CCB's) to the ready mix concrete industry. He was promoted into a management position and transferred to Atlanta. While in Atlanta he joined, as Sales Manager, a small startup company that was in the same business. Eventually he became the President and CEO and grew the company into one of the largest in the United States handling marketing and disposal of CCB's for power plants throughout the country.

Bill left that business in 1998 and moved to Sandestin, Florida where he sold construction materials to the building industry. In 2003 Bill and Mary moved to Freeport, Florida where they currently live. Since 2009 he has been active in many areas including the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Station Destin, the Institute for Senior Professionals, the Kiwanis Club of Freeport-South Walton and the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce. Bill is also active in many community organizations and is presently the Walton County State Committeeman for the Republican Party.

The ECCAC is looking for donations of the following items...

Halloween Candy
Trick or treat, give us something good to eat! The ECCAC is currently accepting donations of individually wrapped candy in preparation for Halloween. In addition to passing out candy to all the little ghosts and goblins that come through the centers daily, we also need lots for the Halloween booth 'Around the Lake' in DeFuniak Springs and for BooLu Fest. Being able to give away candy at our booths encourages people to come by so we can share with them what we provide to our community.

IPOD
Do you have an IPOD you are no longer using? If so, please consider donating it to the Pierce Family Center so we can have music throughout the halls. Contact Chelsea at  chelsea@eccac.org if you can help.

Tervis
Save the planet, skip the plastic water bottles and get an ECCAC Tervis! Each custom Tervis is $20, please contact Kim at Kim@eccac.org to purchase yours!

Emerald Coast Impact 100
If you know someone affiliated with the Emerald Coast Impact 100 team, please share with them how much you support the ECCAC. ECCAC has applied to their organization for a grant to support the Child Safety Matters campaign. This is an educational tool that, if funded, ECCAC will take into the schools and educate children on various types of child abuse and what to do if they feel threatened. There are only three counties in the state of Florida that are not participating in this educational program, Okaloosa, Walton and Sarasota. If ECCAC is awarded this grant, it will allow our kids another tool to fight abuse.

We raced for a cause at Alys Beach's 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run, and we couldn't be more thankful that a portion of the proceeds are being donated to the ECCAC!

We appreciate everyone who comes out to volunteer at the ECCAC, and we especially appreciate United Way for providing volunteers from our local community during their Day of Caring! A big thanks to ResortQuest & Electric Transformer for spending time at the Pierce Family Center!

What a yummy surprise! We'd like to t hank Jim & Tammy Pierce for sponsoring our staff lunches. Volunteer Dani Relyea, who hates to have her photo taken, made delicious chili for everyone last month at the Pierce Family Center!

Our Center has never looked prettier, thanks to Israel Williams of
Ziic Outdoors LLC. Israel and his staff have agreed to maintain the grounds at the Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center in DeFuniak Springs as their donation to our mission!
