August Advocacy Alert
Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center August Newsletter
Pierce Family /   Donate  /   Events  /   Services
Each day is a day to celebrate at the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center. While what we do is not a cause for celebration, each day our staff, partner organizations and volunteers help children and families during a very traumatic time in their lives.

Thanks to the ECCAC team, during the month of July, seven cases were settled in court, with all but one of them being sexual in nature. Three were found guilty by a jury of their peers. Two of these are awaiting sentencing, while one already received life in prison. The other four pled guilty and were sentenced to a total of over eighty five years.

This is a testament to the brave children and the ECCAC team, as well as everyone that supports the ECCAC's mission. Without the staff, partners, volunteers and supporters, ECCAC would not have the resources or ability to help these children. So thank you for your continued support and give yourself a little pat on the back. Children in our community are a little bit safer, and those affected can now start to heal.

Recently one of our center's Mental Health Therapists passed along a story to our staff that really exemplifies why we do what we do, and just how much support from the community means to the ECCAC staff and our mission....

"I had a young man graduate today from therapy. His peer perpetrator will not be prosecuted, but this young man worked his treatment, learned how brave he really is, and was able to say, 'It was not my fault. I don't have to be embarrassed for something a *bad guy* did. It's his fault. I'm brave and I'm loved.'"

Our therapist also noted that the young man had amazing family who helped facilitate his speedy treatment.

It is stories like these that keep us fighting for our children. Without community support, moments like this would not be possible. So THANK YOU for you continued support and we look forward to meeting you at one of our next events.

Each month we use this section to educate everyone on the various parts of the Emerald Cost Children's Advocacy Center (ECCAC). So many organizations and people come together at ECCAC to make the process run smoothly and easier for those families going through a traumatic situation. This month we want to share with you a loss of one of our own.
Annabelle, and her handler Diane Berger, have been a Therapy Animal Volunteer Team at the ECCAC since the fall of 2015.  In April, Diane said had to say goodbye to Annabelle. National Child Abuse Prevention Month, also known as Child Abuse Prevention Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child abuse. April has been designated Child Abuse Prevention Month in the United States since 1983.

There are approximately 1,100 cases of child sexual and physical abuse reported annually in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, an average of three a day. Despite those big numbers, nearly 2/3 of the actual needs to help child victims go unmet due to lack of reporting to authorities. It is estimated that for every one child ECCAC helps, there are two children out there who are not helped.

If you see something, call 1-800-96-ABUSE.

That is the 24/7 job of the multi-disciplinary team of staff and volunteers at Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Centers (ECCAC) in Okaloosa and Walton Counties.  ECCAC is a part of the National Children's Advocacy Center non-profit organization. There are 777 Centers across the country, with 27 of them located in Florida. In ECCAC's 16-year history, over 11,000 children have received more than 43,000 services at no cost to include mental health therapy, crisis intervention, referrals to other community providers, interviews and medicals. This newsletter is focused on prevention and has many opportunities for you to show your support.

Did You Know?
There are approximately 1,100 cases of child sexual and physical abuse reported annually in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, an average of three a day. Despite those big numbers, nearly 2/3 of the actual needs to help child victims go unmet due to lack of reporting to authorities. It is estimated that for every one child ECCAC helps, there are two children out there who are not helped.

How Can You Help?

Thanks to Cathy and Terry Jones of Compass Builders for their donation in honor of Roland Short . These funds were put to immediate use as we were able to have all our screens replaced in the Niceville Center. Now we no longer have birds sneaking in when we open a window.

Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center February Newsletter
Pierce Family /   Donate  /   Events  /   Services

The State Attorney's Office is one of the many organizations that partner with the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center and have personnel in both the Niceville and DeFuniak Springs centers.  With a staff of four, these individuals are responsible for prosecuting all crimes against children in both Okaloosa and Walton counties. Having their office in the Centers, enables them to stay close to the cases and the people involved. Meetings are held in the Centers to bring all organizations together as a case progresses. This allows the attorneys to just walk down the hall to get a question answered, or clarification on a case.

In the past four months, their conviction rate has been 100%. A big thanks goes out to this team! They see and hear a lot of bad stuff every day, but they keep coming back and putting the bad people away!

The Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center will be participating in a number of events and fundraisers during the month of April. As April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, this is a pivotal time for us to spread our message and share ways the community can help!

Reserve your package now and help us

Holiday Treats Help us give our clients a sweet treat. Individually packaged St. Patrick's Day and Easter candy may be dropped off at either our Niceville or DeFuniak Springs location.

Sponsorships and Donations needed
So many of our fabulous donors generously gave to The Pierce Family Children's Advocacy Center building campaign in the last couple years, that we are close to having it paid off. THANK YOU! This is a great accomplishment, but now we need to get back to raising funds for operating both centers. Since many donations that would have normally gone to operations were designated to the building fund, we are now in need of donations to help with operations. If you are interested/able to help with any of the following sponsorship opportunities, please contact Kim@eccac.org or 850-833-9237 x283 for more information.

Screens The Niceville center is in desperate need of new screens for all the windows. Many are torn, rotted or gone altogether. We have a handyman who is willing to donate his time to replace them all, but we need $500 to purchase all the needed supplies. One donor for that amount or two donors willing to give $250, will help us make it happen. Contact Kim or make your donation online. A little fresh air flowing through the windows this spring would be great!

Staff Surprises Not only does ECCAC do all they can to help child victims of abuse, we do our best to take care of all the folks that help these kids through their journey to healing. These folks see a lot of bad stuff on a daily basis, so if we can bring a little sunshine to their day, that's what we want to do. We are currently looking for individuals/organizations to provide meals at each of our centers for the wonderful staff. Meals can be as simple as dropping off pizza, or can be prepared in our kitchens. Breakfast, lunch or dinner is needed monthly at both centers. Not only does this bring a smile to the adults in the building, any families or children there at the same time are always welcome to join in, or take a plate home. Can't provide the meal but still want to help? Sponsorships are available for $100/month per center.

"Juiced" Sponsor Donors are needed to provide funds for the juice we give out to each child that comes through our doors. You can adopt one center or both, for a month or longer. Sponsorships are $250 per center per month and your name will be posted in our kitchen for the month of your sponsorship.

Cocktails & Camo Gala Sponsorship We are currently seeking sponsorships and auction items for the 17th annual Kieran May Memorial Golf and Gala event. Coming up fast, the gala and auction will be held at the Sandestin Hilton on May 20. For the 1st time, the golf tournament will be moved to the fall, scheduled for Sept 10 at Kelly Plantation. The separation of these events is for 2017 only and provides a unique opportunity for sponsors. Instead of being promoted during one time of the year, businesses will be highlighted from now until September. Sponsorships range from $15,000 to $100, so there is something for everyone. Contact  Kim@eccac.org  or 850-833-9237 x283 to find out how you can be a part of our largest fundraising event. Commit to a sponsorship and pay by March 31 and receive a 10% discount.

Upcoming Event Sponsorships We have a number of other opportunities slated for 2017 that you can be a part of. Contact Kim for more information on the following.
July 12 & 13: Northwest Florida Daily News Jr. Golf Tournament
September 7: Wiggin' Out For A Cause at Grand Boulevard
October 1: Destin Commons 2nd Annual Charity Cornhole Tournament

A big thank you to the staff and clients at Zook Chiropractic for raising $1,655 for the Emerald Coast Children's Advocacy Center.

Thanks to Frank Flautt and the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, our Niceville Center received two new flat screen televisions. These TVs are used daily when kids are undergoing interviews. They enable the kids to only tell their story one time while all the people that need to see and hear it are behind 1 way glass observing and watching. Tapes from these interviews can be used in court, so they need to be the best quality we can provide.

We are so thankful for LuLu's Destin for kicking off our first Eating for Advocacy at the end of last month. LuLu's donated 10% of their proceeds back to our centers. If you know of an area restaurant that would be interested in hosting a future Eating for Advocacy, please contact Kim Henderson at 850-833-9237 x283 or email Kim@ECCAC.org.
